An AI scientist, commenting on a recent article, fell back on a tried and true response. "I believe these extreme positions are pure fear-mongering." Really? Whenever someone tries to wave away concerns about automation or AI, they usually reach for the same tired argument: "Technological progress has always created more jobs than it has destroyed." It's a comforting myth, usually repeated by people who have never watched an entire town collapse when its only factory closed. It sounds measured. Rational. Responsible.
